You Better Work

It's an event that many stars utilize to call attention to their new projects, or for that matter themselves. The Grammy Awards red carpet is no stranger to bold colors, feathers and sequins and other dramatic elements that consequently launch these artists into a stratosphere of legitimate stardom. Grammy, actually ANY music award show, rule of thumb tends to be "the bigger the better." the more over-the-top you can make your outfit, the more creative, and thus legitimately artistic, you must be.

This years ceremony was no different. Take MIA pairing Manish Aurora's interpretation of Bo Peep with a fresh pair of blue kicks. Or Adele, who sported Hamish Bowles as the ULTIMATE arm accessory, then topped her subdued LBD with a gorgeous in-your-face green satin jacket, as if to poke fun at our envy. The glitz, which of course comes standard with Gwyneth Paltrow tip-toeing on stage in versace metallic, was definitely not lacking.

The most poignant moments, however, came in shades of grey and black. Jennifer Hudson stood up to receive her award in a subdued Roland Mouret. Tearing up and expressing true emotion, her triumph over adversity bloomed out of a fan of modernistic pleats. It was nowhere near as colorful as coldplay in updated Sgt.Pepper gear, but she was one of the brightest visions of the evening.

It goes to show that fashion is not what dictates style. Sometimes the statement exists in the elements that surface when a look is broken down to its raw form. a massive marching band towered over radiohead frontman thom yorke from a bleacher-style platform, but he never looked more like an industry giant. You're nothing if you arent something at the most basic level, they seemed to say. Makes us want to throw out all our DVF wraps and head straight for Jil Sander.
